As I step into my new role as EDC-VC’s board chair, I want to thank our 2013 chair Supervisor Kathy Long, under whose leadership our organization continued to help businesses in our region expand and grow.
The board’s goals for this year are to continue fostering job creation and retention by supporting businesses with expert consulting services and providing increased access to needed capital.
Thank you, Paul Orfalea, Kinko's founder and co-founder of the Orfalea Foundation, for being our keynote speaker at our 17th Annual Meeting, "From Preschool to Professional."
At January's meeting, Sim Tang-Paradis, vice president at City National Bank's Oxnard banking office, was named 2014 board chair. Port Hueneme City Councilmember Sylvia Muñoz Schnopp was elected vice chair and Supervisor Kathy Long, who was last year's chair, will take on the role of secretary/treasurer.
EDC-VC’s Small Business Development Center of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties saw a record performance in 2013, helping entrepreneurs and small businesses create 186 jobs and retain an additional 493 jobs, according to 2013 year-end statistics. The SBDC also increased its economic impact by 87 percent, emerging as a regional leader in facilitating business access to capital.
The SBDC has added three Santa Barbara County-based industry experts to its roster of approximately 30 advisors offering free one-on-one business advising and workshops. Advisor Curtis Stevens is an accounting specialist who is bilingual in Spanish and English; Ken Higgins is a sales and marketing strategist; and Dolores Rivera-Neira has expertise in management training and is bilingual.
Small, nonfarm businesses in Ventura County can apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). These Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) offset economic losses due to reduced revenues caused by this year’s drought.
